Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) was one of the the greatest artists of the 18th century.

He favoured simple still lifes and unsentimental domestic interiors, documenting the life of the Paris bourgeoisie

Lucian Freud obviously admired him as he made an almost exact copy of one of his paintings.
