I actually think his portraits are incredible!
the impasto technique he does is amazing .. look at the depth he has created
the muted hues dont distract you from his facial features. He avoids nothing and is completely honest about himself.

Of course he is looking at himself in a mirror. That is how most self-portraits are made.
And you get the feeling that he is asking "Who am I ?" or "How can I show people what I am really like?"
He was very good at revealing in his paintings the true character of other people - something that a photograph could never do.
But it must be very difficult to be so analytical about oneself. -
