Perhaps it was because he was so bad at representing figures

I think it's because they're devoid of character...and so many are clones...the ideas are so much more important than depicting real human beings, which makes the pictures far less meaningful to me...I'm sure other people find them wonderful, and he was a very gifted artist, I just can't relate to his art for all of the already mentioned reasons...GBHs..XX

I can't help but like it. It is orderly. Most of the boats have been hauled up, leaving only one in the water. It is twilight and the people have gone home for dinner. The boats are cleaned-up and teak oil rubbed in to make that lovely glow. All in an orderly row waiting for tomorrow. Another day of fun.

I agree with all that - but it is stll rather lonely and soulless.

That's the trouble with Spencer...all his works to me, with or without people in them, seem empty...it's as if real feelings are absent from them...they express ideas and concepts and, in this case, a well painted scene devoid of any living thing, so push me away rather than draw me in...strange, but it's how I feel about his art...GBHs...XXX
