I think this one is more natural and doesn't look posed. Tuke may have painted it from his imagination.

Lovely boys!
Tuke seems to like his boys long and lean, to the extent of exaggeration.

I wish I still had my youthful figure.
A few months ago a local art group was advertising for "nude life class models" male or female - of any age.
I did think of offering my services, provided the money was right - and they had an electric fire!
What about you - would you do it?-
- 2009-07-10 @ 15:51:54
I think I would like to.
It all depends upon the person who asks.
One would have to feel at ease with them.
I think the artist would be very kind with our bodies, Colin.

I think I have discussed with you before the veteran British artist Lucien Freud. He would paint a good nude portrait of me!

Did he really?
You never told me that!
How wonderful.
Would love to see one of those.
From your early photos, you were really cute.-
- 2009-07-10 @ 22:11:35
No, he never did paint me - nude or otherwise, although I would have loved him to have done so.
The painting would now be worth a fortune.

Maybe not - but the overall effect is the same.

Noting the date it was painted, one wonders about the style used - is it a tribute or a parody or an anachronistic stab at impressionism? I ask open heartedly, I don't have an answer.
As for the subject matter - of it's time I'd say (as long as such scenes were genuinely commonplace in 1902). Vaguely homoerotic I'd say - do you know anything about the artist beyond that which the (ever reliable) Wikipedia can tell us?
Do I like it? It is skillfully rendered but the composition hints at cropping (the youth standing in the boat is too close to the top of the canvas and the swimming one too near to the right hand edge to give a sense of balance.-
- 2009-07-10 @ 13:55:01
I think he was being serious.
He seems to have been obsessed with young boys - at least painting them.
As well as Wkipedia, take a look at this website:

Perhaps the picture was cropped when it was posted to the internet.-

Yes, I think that you are right, now that you've shared more of his work and I've been able to read around him a little.
The Tuke series has been polemicising for your correspondents. I sit in the "skillful artist, don't care for the monotony of the subject matter" camp (go on, make something of it - Frankie Howerd 1956!!!).-
- 2009-07-10 @ 22:03:28
There is nothing "camp" about the boys - possibly the artist though!
But what does it matter, as long as the boys were not exploited or abused?
There is no doubt that Tuke was a skilful painter, although his obsession with this subject can become boring.
