THE GARDEN WALL

This painting by JSS is an interesting composition - two figures separated by a dominating doorway, with a view to the garden wall of the title.

Does it work? I think it does because, after stepping outside, I return to the two ladies and try to guess what their relationship is - and why they are sitting apart.

Yesterday I went to London and paid a brief visit to the National Gallery's current exhibition "Corot to Monet - A fresh look at Landscape from the Collection".

Whilst I appreciated the work of the French pre-Impressionists, I was pleased to see that a few paintings by John Constable were also included.

That's a much better composition... Lovely feeling of sun and humour too and I can imagine the older woman asking the younger one if she likes somebody a lot and she turns away dreamily thinking of him... GBHs...XXX

The left hand lady reminds me of the Queen Mum!

I think it is daughter of the house and her chaperone.

It is a restful picture.

Yes there is a likeness to the Queen Mother, when young.

I thought the other woman may be her mother - not chaperone.

What a nice day-out to London yesterday, Colin. I am glad you saw the works of Constable as well as the 'pre-Impressionists.' Such a pleasure. You most probably had lunch with one of your numerous friends.
I immediately saw dark and light again. White with black. The lady in mourning? The young girl discussing her forthcoming marriage?
All very delightful. Such talent!

  It didn't work out as planned.
  
  I met my elderly French friend in the Apple store as arranged and demonstrated the Mac computer which he was thinking of buying.
  
  We then made a quick tour of the art exhibition at the National Gallery and went back to Canonbury, where he had been staying for a few days with a 81-year-old Scottish doctor.
  
  The three of us were supposed to be going out for an evening meal at a local Thai restaurant, but when we reached his house we found that he had felt ill during the day and was in hospital.
  
  We decided to visit him but, when we got there, he was away having a CT scan - so we went to nearby Euston Station and had fish and chips in "Harry Ramsden'. Later we had 10 minutes chat with him.
  
  All's well today - he has been discharged and is going to Paris on Eurostar tomorrow evening.
